![]()
Date: August 5, 2011
Location: Nijmegen, The Netherlands
Background information
The Experimental Garden and Genebank of the Radboud University of Nijmegen pays special attention to the family of Solanaceae and maintains the most extensive ex situ plant collection of non-tuberous Solanaceae species in the world.
The conservation of the genetic resources of the Solanaceae is of great importance, since many Solanaceae species provide for important sources of food, medicin and ornamental crops, but in addition several species have served well in pioneering biotechnology, genetic engeneering and genetic analysis. The Experimental Garden and Genebank of the Radboud University of Nijmegen has opted for the conservation of Solanaceae species within the framework of the decentralised National Plant Collection of the Botanical Gardens in The Netherlands. Worldwide collaboration and/or exchange has been established, especially with international institutes with Solanaceae germplasm collections.
The Experimental Garden and Genebank belongs to The Institute for Water and Wetland Research, Faculty of Science, Radboud University Nijmegen, which consists of several departments and laboratories.
